**SUMMARY:** Under clinical supervision of a RN or licensed physician/podiatrist, provides basic clinical, front office clerical,
and technical support services for client/patient/clinic. Performs related duties as required.
**DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:** NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in
this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties
listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
1. Assists with Code Blue and other emergencies as directed.
2. Collects basic information from patients about their present and previous medical condition.
3. Completes forms as necessary, e.g., Laboratory slips/requisitions, etc. Transports specimens to laboratory/pathology.
4. Following specific training, the Medical Assistant may administer P.O. intradermal,
intramuscular, subcutaneous injections, and immunizations, performs skin tests, i.e., PPD placement.
5. Gives patient prescriptions, work-slips and/or messages left for patients by Providers.
6. Greets and escorts patients to examination rooms, prepares patients according to procedures, and assists Physician/clinician as instructed. Assists providers/nurses with examination and treatment/procedures.
Prepare patients according to procedures. Assures proper consents are obtained.
7. Maintains patient examination areas, cleans, maintains, and/or sterilizes equipment. Stocks examination rooms, orders medical supplies and equipment. Checks and prepares rooms for clinic's daily schedule. Checks equipment, and advises appropriate personnel when replacements are necessary.
8. Participates in Performance Improvement/Quality Control activities.
9. Performs application and removal of bandages and dressings. May apply orthopedic appliances, e.g., knee
immobilizer, etc (does not apply to Employee Health Services).
10. Performs clerical functions, i.e., answers phones, uses computers, registers patients, makes appointments, completes forms as necessary, files medical records. Makes appointments for patients on AHS computer system when appropriate.
11. Performs simple and routine medical tasks and procedures, i.e., Snellen vision test, urine dipstick test, pregnancy test, basic hearing tests, sputum collection and specimen collection [non-invasive, except for venous puncture].
12. Performs simple non-invasive testing, i.e., EKG, fetal monitoring placement Maternal Child Health [MCH].
13. Performs veni-punctures for blood draws with phlebotomy certification, i.e., glucose monitoring, hemoglobin,
hematocrit, and finger-sticks for CBS.
14. Places patient charts in order for Physicians/Providers/clinicians, confirms that X-rays have been ordered, laboratory test results are available, and that consultation referrals are in proper place on chart. Assists with completion of proper documentation of patient charts.
15. Provide guidance and instructions: Instructs and assists patients in undressing procedures for Physician's examination as appropriate. Direct patients to various departments outside of clinic [X-ray, Ultrasound, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Admitting and/or Billing Department, WIC, etc. Instruct patient and family members in techniques and methods of self-care, as appropriate; give patients basic pre and post-operative/care instructions as necessary; participate in orientation of new employees/students in areas as necessary; follow clinician/providers treatment plans.
16. Transports patients to ancillary services. Assists patients with limited mobility in wheelchairs, with crutches, gait impairment, and/or gurney assists.
Education: Graduation from a certified/accredited school.
Minimum Experience: Training must be from either a licensed Physician and Surgeon, or Podiatrist who certified the content and proficiency of training according to California law to qualify as a Medical Assistant.
Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support Certification issued by the American Heart Association. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
Required Licenses/Certifications: must maintain ongoing Certification or in-service training as required by the California Code of Regulations (CCR).
