Patient Care Technician-2P Surgical Unit FT Night

Howard County General Hospital is seeking experienced PCT's. We offer a convenient location, free parking and a robust benefit package.

This position would be 36 hours per week. Some weekends required. Hours are 7:00pm-7:30am.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs direct patient care tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse and performs various tasks as competency documentation designates. Work occasionally requires internal contacts outside the work group to exchange relevant information. Communication with external contacts involves providing or giving factual information.


  1. Employee demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit as indicated by the following:
  • Demonstrates ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
  • Identifies the physical, motor, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics for age group(s) served.
  • Demonstrates age appropriate communication skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide the care needed as described in the job description and the department's scope of service for the patient groups under his/her care.

Age group(s) served will be one or more of the following: Infant (Birth to 12 months), Child (13 months to 12 years), Adolescent (13 years to 17 years), Adult (18 years to 69 years) or Geriatric (70 years and older).

  1. Has access to clean supply areas including, but not limited to IV solutions, needles, and syringes for the purpose of obtaining linen and/or supplies.

As delegated by the registered nurse and certified competent:

  1. Performs ostomy care, simple dressing changes, give enemas, and bladder catheterization, as ordered.
  2. Has access to supplies needed to perform direct patient care as allowed in their job description.
  3. Takes and records patient's vital signs, including pulse oximetry and pain level screen.
  4. Performs 12 lead electrocardiograms.
  5. Provides basic respiratory therapy treatments (directed cough, incentive spirometry).
  6. Documents patient input and output (I/O).
  7. Performs bedside glucometer testing.
  8. Collects samples such as urine, blood and sputum from patients for testing.
