Caregiver (IDD) Description:

Caregiver (IDD) Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of IDD, the Direct Service Provider (DSP) or IRSS supports the development of independent living skills and promotes choice while assisting persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) to live productive and meaningful lives. Services and supports are provided in the client's home or in the community. Supports can include personal care, assisting with homemaker tasks, providing respite, and mentorship. Ensures compliance with all state and federal regulations, AOI policies, and regulatory agency requirements related to the position. The primary goals are promotion of client dignity, independence, and safety.

Caregiver (IDD) Primary Responsibilities

• Develops opportunities to promote client independence in the home and community

• Assists clients to live life in their homes and communities

• Works with client to achieve the goals outlined in the Service Plan

• Establishes and maintains appropriate relationships with clients

• Provides assistance or prompting on activities of daily living, which may include: personal hygiene including bathing, hair care, dressing, shaving, oral care, skin and nail care

• Provides medication reminders and assistance when appropriate

• Provides assistance or prompting on activities of home care, which may include light housekeeping

• Provides basic first aid and CPR when necessary

• Provides coaching on life skills, which may include: how to ride the bus, meal preparation, budgeting, planning, etc.

• Provides coaching on workplace skills, and supports in the workplace when appropriate

• Assists with individual behavioral management needs and crisis intervention when appropriate

• Assists with planning and preparing meals, homemaker services, and when appropriate assists clients with needs during meal times

• Observes, records, and reports to appropriate supervisory personnel: any signs and/or symptoms which may be indicative of changes in well-being--any changes that could adversely affect a clients well-being in their physical environment. Any other incidents or concerns, including but not limited to: falls or injuries or evidence of an injury, missed medications, lack of food on the premises, etc.

• Attends and participates in staff meetings

• Maintains strong two-way communication with team members and AOI administration: Attends meetings and absorbs information provided, or proactively acquires information presented through other means

• Monitors and reports changes in status

• Promotes personal and client safety by observing infection control practices according to AOI policies

• Notifies supervisor of any training needs

• Documents care provided according to state and federal rules and regulations as well as AOI policies

• Maintains confidentiality and follows HIPAA guidelines in all aspects of the job

• Successfully completes required training to meet compliance requirements

• Performs other related duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary

Caregiver (IDD) Requirements:

Caregiver (IDD) Education and Experience

• Prior experience working with persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities preferred

• CPR / First Aid training within 90 days of hire

• QBS Safety First Training within 90 days of hire

• QMAP Certification within 90 days of hire (if duties are to include medication administration)

• Has a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle, or a workable plan for alternate transportation

• Driving record is free of DUI or DWI for past 5 years

• Knowledge of State, Federal and Licensing rules and regulations of services and supports provided by a Program Approved Service Agency (PASA)

• Successful skills/competency evaluation

• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing exceptional client and personal services. This includes awareness of client needs, meeting quality standards for services, and focusing on client satisfaction

• Knowledge and awareness of individual differences in ability, personality, and interests

• Knowledge of and ability to use proper body mechanics

• Maintains an effective working knowledge of AOI's policies and procedures relevant to IDD services

• Knowledge of and ability to provide and adhere to infection control measures

• Must maintain 12 CEUs per year

• High school diploma or equivalent

Caregiver (IDD) Required Skills

• Must have the skills to provide and document client care

• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, to clients and employees

• Must be professional and actively look for ways to help people. Gives full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times

• Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems

• Recognizes when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. Recognizes that there is a problem

• Must exercise individual initiative and discretion in confidential matters

• Possess excellent organizational skills and have a strong attention to detail

• Accepts accountability and responsibility for own actions

Caregiver (IDD) Physical Requirements

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

• Ability to complete paperwork and to read reference books and other written documents

• Frequently perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as lifting, balancing, pushing, pulling, walking, stooping, bending and prolonged standing per the clients care plan.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus

• Flexible work schedule to include days, nights, weekdays, and possibly weekends. AOI does not schedule in shifts or guarantee hours.

• In the field the employee deals directly with clients, relatives, Authorized Representatives and other employees in the client's home.

• The employee may be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses
